Wallbarn Protecto-drain is a high density polyethylene (HDPE) cupped drainage sheet which acts as a protection and drainage layer for waterproofed surfaces.
Its specially designed cups collect water and channel it away from the surface towards an appropriate drainage system. It protects the membrane from abrasion or puncture damage, has high tearing resistance, and also helps to provide good ventilation to the building.
When Wallbarn Protecto-drain 8 is fitted to the foundation wall, it protects the membrane from being punctured during backfill as well as damage from settlement or ground salts. The air gap prevents hydrostatic pressure building up and helps to ventilate the wall. The water simply runs down the outer surface towards the drain. Wallbarn Protectodrain 8 can also be fitted to floors to act as a vapour barrier and damp proof layer.
Further protection and drainage is achieved by using Wallbarn Protectodrain G8. This sheeting has a geotextile layer bonded to the outer side which filters out particles but allows the water to run through the fabric into the air gap. This creates a drainage channel where the water can be directed to the drain or pipe.
Wallbarn Protecto-drain 20 is a heavy duty drainage sheet which can be applied to areas where a far greater degree of weight resistance, membrane protection and water drainage is required, such as bridges and subterranean tunnels
A cover profile can be fitted to the top edge of all types of Protecto-drain, which ensures ventilation of the air gap.
Green roofs are becoming increasingly popular and important for flat roof design in UK. Traditionally more common in Europe, green roofs are now seen as a major part of how contractors build and present flat spaces.
Drainage sheeting is an important component in the complete green roof system.
Wallbarn Protecto-drain can be used in roof garden applications. This material comprises the HDPE studded sheeting with a geotextile filter layer bonded or loose laid on the upper and lower sides.
The HDPE sheet itself acts as root barrier and vapour mat, and the upper facing studs will collect water to ensure a sufficient moisture level in the soil.
Wallbarn Protecto-drain G8 can be used for extensive roof gardens, but where a higher level of water collection is sought, for example on higher intensity roof gardens holding grass and root plants; it is advisable to use Wallbarn Protecto-drain GR20. This product will give a higher level of protection and weight tolerance, and will be able to sustain substrate levels up to 200mm thick.
Wallbarn offers a variation on the traditional drainage sheet with its new Perforated range, designed specifically with green roofs in mind.
The cups within the sheeting contain small drainage outlets at the edges to allow excess water to escape, whilst keeping a certain amount of water to remain in the cups, keeping a level of moisture available for the vegetation above.
It is important to remember, however, that these materials do not alone provide a drought resistant system. Regular watering and maintanance is required for all roof gardens and green roofs.
By using some Wallbarn’s geotextile fabrics in conjunction with Perforated Protecto-drain, an effective green roof system is achieved.
Our thicker fleeces not only act as a filtration layer, but they also hold an amount of water which can rise through the vapour holes in the HDPE sheeting back into the soil above.
Therefore the growing medium will not become completely dried out.
Wallbarn has a range of materials which cater for any type of soil retention or drainage system. Please also look our pur Pro-grass pre-seeded biotextile fabric for more ideas on roof gardens
We have been working with a number of industry experts both in UK and Europe and are in the position to help the contractor by giving design, supply and installation advice for whatever different applications are required.
