Geotextiles and Geomembranes

GeotextilesForms of geotextiles and geomembranes have been used for thousands of years to provide separation, filtration and reinforcing functions in a structure. Geotextiles and geomembranes are fabrics that have been designed to provide effective solutions to a wide variety of problems arising from civil engineering & horticultural work.

There are two main classes of geotextiles and geomembranes, permeable and non-permeable; and in each category are a range of different types of geotextiles to choose from to meet the needs of your specific application.

These properties ensure that geotextiles are absolutely ideal to for use in conjunction with:

  • Stabilisation & strengthening
  • Prevention of unevenness on driveways
  • Prevention of the mixing of construction layers
  • Providing a highly effective filtration layer for all drainage applications

Because geotextiles have historically been made of natural plant, plant fibre based geotextiles have been subject to a limited lifespan & have provided durability issues as they start to degrade. This is no longer the case as modern geotextiles and geomembranes are now generally constructed from synthetic polymer (such as PET, PVA, PP) or a composite of natural and synthetic material.

Geotextiles and Geomembranes can be woven, knitted or non-woven. Different fabric composition and construction are suitable for different applications. Non-woven geotextiles are an arrangement of fibres either oriented or randomly patterned in a sheet, resembling felt. These geotextiles provide planar water flow in addition to stabilization of soil.

Typical applications include:

  • Access roads
  • Aggregate drains
  • Asphalt pavement overlays
  • Erosion control

Geotextiles and geomembranes have tremendous value when used in demolition as when combined with steel wire fencing, they are provide an excellent solution for containing explosive debris.
