Another new territory for Wallbarn [21 December 2011]
Wallbarn has just achieved its first sales order to Saudi Arabia for rubber support pads. This brings the number of countries in the Middle East where Wallbarn is active to five.
Coming soon……. [13 December 2011]
…..TD headpieces for Megapads
These headpieces can house a 2 inch timber joist effectively and because the Megapads can tolerate 800kg per unit, a larger span between units is possible, meaning less units per m2.
Our new member [1 December 2011]
Wallbarn welcomes its latest recruit, Alice Tory, who is joining the team at the sales office. No doubt customers will soon be speaking to her where she will be able to help with the sales and administration of orders.
Standard CAD Blocks and NBS Plus Specification Clauses – save many many minutes to make your business more competitive [30 November 2011]
In today’s highly competitive and some would report shrinking UK construction industry, it is in the interest of the designer / specifier to keep their design / specification / drawing time to a minimum; and anything that can save a few minutes here can greatly add up; and this is true whether you are an Architect, Engineer, Contractor, Surveyor or Facilities Management company these saved minutes can all mean being more efficient and ultimately more competitive.
The use of CAD Blocks and Standard specification clauses have been round since the early 1990’s when PC’s started to become a standard fixture within design and drafting offices. Though the general uptake of this standard information was relatively slow for the classic ‘chicken and egg’ reason, suppliers and manufacturers did not want to spend lots of time generating standard drawings unless there were lots of potential specifiers who were going to use them, and as a result potential specifiers were not using standard information in great quantities as the volume of information was just not there.
Now in 2011 things have greatly moved on with huge libraries of standard CAD drawings now available on-line, and the NBS (National Building Specification) is now very widely accepted and supported throughout the construction industry supply chain with a large numbers of manufacturers and suppliers now submitting standard specification clauses to NBS Plus for all their products.
So what this basically means for you the designer and specifier is savings in time; no more hunting around for the correct dimensions before you then draft manually, no more searching through catalogues or manufacturers web-sites to cut and paste the correct information for the specification. Many saved minutes to ultimately make your business more competitive.
Standard CAD Blocks
One way to increase efficiency within the building design and drawing process is use standard CAD Blocks to reuse to standard geometry.
With the vast quantity of products that are installed within todays buildings, the fewer parts of the drawings the Architect, Engineers and Contractors CAD Operator has to draw from scratch for their design and installation drawings the better.
Using standard CAD Blocks can also increase drawing accuracy; many of the Blocks are available directly from product manufacturers so the supplied drawings are highly accurate in their dimensions and geometry.
These Blocks are available either directly from the supplier / manufacturer which is often the best source for specific products so you can be sure of dimensional accuracy, or on-line libraries such as www.??????.com which are often best used for standard symbols and generic products.
NBS Specification
NBS have been producing specification systems and compiling standard specification clauses now for over 30 years. The NBS is very widely used now within design practices across the UK and therefore it is becoming more and more attractive for manufacturers to supply their product specification to NBS Plus do the specifiers can directly access this information via their NBS system library.
Specifiers do though need to be aware though that products are available on this library so they can actually be incorporated within their specification, so there is still a responsibility on manufacturers and suppliers to ensure their specification clauses are listed correctly within the NBS system, plus communicate with specifiers directly to inform them of this. If these things are not done then specifiers can waste time hunting for the specification information and may not find it and have to either create their own clause or use a generic clause.
CAD Blocks and NBS Plus Clauses are a great time saver for the designer / CAD Operator / specifier, though only if they know what and where the information is – but if they do this can mean being more competitive.
Wallbarn (Specialist Products for Construction) – links to their
Julian is in Dubai this week looking round the Big 5 construction exhibition. Interesting as usual, looks like projects in UAE are starting to kick off again after a slight pause in the last couple of years. Germany has a large presence as usual, and so does Turkey, who sponsored the booklet and badges. The UK stand looks a little lost to be perfectly honest, shame.
We manufacture and supply materials to the UK construction industry and are definitely seeing a growing level concern regarding the lack of new projects to replace the large schemes such as the Olympic that are nearing their completion.
Support Pads for Timber Decking
As a manufacturer we supply to all spectrums of the UK construction industry, from the small domestic builder to the large national contractor so we get a quite good snap shot of what is going on in UK construction.
So whilst we have seen this growing level of concern regarding the lack of new large construction projects, what we are seeing is a steady stream of building conversions and refurbishments.
So whilst the banks are still not lending and everyone has become so much more cautious with their cash, the fact is that business, individual families and organisations are growing or shrinking, thus requiring changes in the buildings in which they are living or operating out of.
This does not change the fact that things are tough and that there are more companies now chasing less work; but the glimmer of hope for us and many other companies out there is that economical products and services suited to retrofitting to existing building are still in demand.
Componant Green Roof or Brown Roof
Two of the product areas for us that are doing well are green roofs and support pads for suspended decking and paving; these are both adaptable economical systems that can be easily added to existing buildings to help improve appearance, and therefore are still proving to be popular.
So it just looks like we are going to have to keep on innovating, meeting the demand that is out there, doing a great job and fighting for the work that is there. Times do not stay tough forever, and what does not kill you makes you stronger!

Advice on paving up to edges
[14 March 2010]
Contractors often ask how to pave up to the edges, upstands and walls when using Wallbarn ASP supports.
Because of the strength of our polypropylene support pads, the base plates can be cut with a saw into a semi-circle shape. The arms ensure that the weight is still evenly spread onto the base plate. Take care not to cut into the central core as this will lead to the support pad becoming unbalanced.
The support pad can then be placed so that the head plate will butt up to the wall or upstand. By breaking off two of the positioning lugs, the paving slab will remain fully supported, and be positioned close up to the edge with no cavity between the slab and the wall. The paving can then be continued across the deck for a seamless effect.

Wallbarn helps the Government with its "Building Britain's future" strategy
[23 June 2009]
Last night Wallbarn Director Julian Thurbin was invited to attend the "Building Britain's' Future" event at 10 Downing Street, hosted by the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.
During the event he discussed the current state of the construction industry with senior civil servants and Government Ministers. Lord Mandelson was particularly interested to hear Julian's views on the Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme, which, Julian stated, had not seemed to have trickled through to Commercial and Branch Manager level at his bank.
Julian also discussed the issue of "super extended credit terms" which some main contractors seem to be imposing on contractors and materials suppliers. Senior civil servants have asked for further details.
For more information of the event please contact julian@wallbarn.com or call 01883 715983
Wallbarn green roofs flowering in the spring
[19 June 2009]
Our green roofs are certainly thriving in the recent good weather. Because Wallbarn green roof blankets are made form the hardiest, best quality sedum, they establish themselves quickly and produce the most varied and interesting textures and colours on a retrofitted green roof. This component green roof was installed in April 2009.
This flowering sedum has quickly transformed a boring, ugly single storey flat roof in an urban setting into the focal point of the area, achieving both ascetic as well as environmental improvements.

New Heavy Duty Mega Pads launched !
[5 January 2009]
Wallbarn announces its long awaited new range of supports pads - the MEGA PAD. These support pads range in height from 35mm up to 620mm high
The stems come in individual sections which are locked into place, with an adjustable element at the top of the support, which can also be locked for secure placement. All base plates are fitted with brackets to hold slope adjusters where paving onto a built-to-falls decks.
New Slope Adjusters for all adjustable support pads coming in 2009
[22 December 2008]
An exciting new development for all Wallbarn adjustable supports. Instead of fixing levelling shims at the tops of the supports, with the risks of head pieces rocking, Wallbarn has devised a new base plate for its entire range of adjustable supports.
200mm in diameter, they contain brackets which hold wedge-shaped slope adjusters in three different sizes, to accommodate different amounts of fall in the deck By fixing the fall at the base, the support pad remains completely vertical, and there is level weight distribution.
More details to come soon.
More New Head Pieces for Adjustable Supports
[1 December 2008]
Wallbarn adds some more new headpieces for its adjustable supports. Short lugs (for thinner tiles) and 5mm or 10mm wide lug pieces for extra drainage mean that different types of paving can be quickly and easily installed onto adjustable supports.
New Head Piece for Adjustable Supports
[20 October 2008]
Wallbarn announces a new headpiece designed for laying timber decking onto decks built to a fall.
This head piece is designed to sit on top of adjustable support pads, where the joist bearer fits between the lugs set 40mm and 60mm apart. A more secure fit can be achieved as the joists are housed between the lugs, making it almost impossible to move.

Wallbarn Timber Slabs
[15 August 2007]
By using suspended Wallbarn Hardwood Timber Paving Slabs, installers combine the natural, attractive finish of timber decking with the speed and ease of laying paving slabs. The timber is made from ethically sourced Brazilian Walnut, from sustainable forests.
It has a very long life span as it is treated with natural oil lacquer before being dried very slowly,so will not absorb water or rot.
Laid in the same way as regular concrete paving slabs, they are suspended on Wallbarn's range of support pads.
The positioning lugs on the support pads allow rainwater to drain underneath and between the slabs into an appropriate outlet.
This avoids the risk of standing water creating a slippery surface or causing wood to rot.
For more information please contact us on 01883 715983 or sales@wallbarn.com
Wallbarn introduces timber roofing slabs
[01 June 2007]
Wallbarn has just launched a new range of hardwood timber slabs for roof decking. Made from South American hardwood supplied from ethical sources, these tiles are laid in the same way as concrete flags, by resting on support pads.
They are 500 x 500mm, either 30mm or 38mm thick. They are extremely hard wearing and very attractive, giving a more natural feel to roof terraces and balconies.
For more information please contact us on 01883 715983 or sales@wallbarn.com

Stackable support pads available in different sizes
They are manufactured in the same way as the polypropylene 17mm pads, they are the same dimensions and can tolerate the same 400kg weight. However, now, instead of having to shim areas between 9mm and 17mm, operatives now have the opportunity to use a pad if they need to install slabs in-between those two heights.
Full technical details later.

Adjustable supports for timber decking
Wallbarn has developed a new flat headed adjustable support pad for use with timber decking. Joists can be laid onto the flat heads and secured by screwing wood nails directly into the head piece, and the decking is then fixed on top. The adjustable stems mean that completely flat timber decking can be laid onto falling roofs, and the timber will not come into contact with standing water, thus reducing the chances of rotting. For more information please contact Wallbarn on 01883 715983 or sales@wallbarn.com.

Wallbarn helps Tesco build a green roof
[20 February 2006]
Wallbarn is proud to announce its involvement in a green roof project for Tesco Superstore, Sutton. Working with landscape architect Greenfix, Wallbarn has supplied Rubber Paving Support Pads to go on the first green roof Tesco has undertaken. “It is a very exciting development for us,” said Alec Thurbin. “Being involved with Tesco at such an early stage, working with a specialist like Greenfix, we are looking forward to developing our green roof activity further”.
Please contact sales@wallbarn.com or call 01883 715983 for further details
Wallbarn has started to supply its complete expansion joint system to London Underground. Director Julian Thurbin says “It is a great coup for us to be securing such blue chip projects with our contractor partners. With clients such as London Underground and many London Borough Councils taking the expansion joint system, we know that we have a bright future with Protecto-joint”.
Wallbarn is launching an exciting range of new products for use in green roof specifications. Included are a new type of Geotextile filter layer and additions to the range of Protecto-drain drainage sheets.
The hydro-entangled Geotextile has a higher density and stronger profile than some other types on the market, and is designed to hold a certain level of water within it, so that it can act as a moisture mat as well as filtration layer within the green roof system. “Landscape designers are very pleased with the results so far” said Julian Thurbin, “as the risk of drying out in a roof garden is decreased using this material”.
A new Protecto-drain with perforations between the cups has been developed to allow water vapour to rise up into the soil; above, even though the drainage function remains as tough as ever. “We are talking to gardeners as well as waterproofers when we discuss green roofs,” Julian continued, “so we can design products which offer solutions to both sides of the problem. There are lots more developments to come in this area, so always remember Wallbarn when thinking green roof.”

Wallbarn brand Rubber Support Pads were chosen by medical construction specialist Medicell for use under their pod units for the nurses’ home at Mansfield Hospital. The soft profile and vibration tolerance made Wallbarn Rubber Support Pads a far better choice than other brands on the market.
The units can be fitted into place on top of the pads easily without risk of damage to either the roof finish or the units themselves. Medicell were delighted with the results, and Wallbarn looks forward to more of these specialised types of application in the future.
