Pro-grass is a biodegradable fabric, pre-sown with seeds and granulated fertilizer which is laid onto prepared soil, helping to establish plant growth in often hard to sow areas.
In areas such as road cuttings, river banks and roof gardens, sowing seeds in awkward areas can often prove difficult.
Pro-grass holds the seeds ion position during the initial growth stages, preventing them being washed away or attacked by birds and other pests. The seeds can “anchor” themselves into the fabric which encourages faster root growth.
Because the seed mix and fertilizer is impregnated into the fabric, there is little risk of erosion. Therefore, lush vegetation growth can be achieved even on very steep slopes or areas where it would normally be very difficult to sow seeds or lay turfs.
This lightweight, flexible fabric is simply laid onto the soil and secured to stop wind uplift.
The seed mix contained within the biotextile fabric will germinate whilst being protected from the elements and birds, enabling a stronger, more consistent growth of grass.
It also leads to a faster, easier way of sowing seeds on large landscape areas, such as golf courses, parks and lawns.
Application:
- Prepare the ground as with traditional sowing – remove weeds, break up soil and level the surface
- Water the soil lightly
- Lay Pro-grass over the soil. Staple fabric down
- Cover fabric with a thin layer of topsoil / sand up to 3mm thick
- Water daily until germination takes place
- Maintain grass as normal once it reaches approximately 10 cm in height
Types:
There are two standard types of Wallbarn Pro-grass - a fast growing rye grass mix and a wildflower seed mix.
The grass variety is fast growing, short and hardy. The seed mix was chosen to produce a decent quality but robust type of grass finish, which can take a certain level of traffic.
The wildflower mix contains a large variety of different plant species. It is designed to allow for different flowers to bloom at different times over the summer, producing an attractive feature and encouraging wildlife.
Although Wallbarn offers two seed types as standard products, bespoke seed mixes can be made up for specific requirements. Different plant types may be needed for more demanding climate conditions, for example. Designers can provide us with their own seeds, which we can then impregnate into the fabric
The product itself is delivered wrapped in polythene film. This “dry” state means contractors do not have to lay the material immediately.
The product can be stored on site until the area becomes available, and the seeds will only start to germinate once the matting is laid out, covered lightly with soil and watered.
It is important to remember that Pro-grass is not a turf, or an alternative to turfing. Results do not come immediately; these are dry seeds after all. The function of this material is to secure and protect the seeds during their germination and early growth.
The fabric itself acts as a mulch in the early stages of germination, helping to block out weeds, and the fertilizer contained in the fabric will feed the plants.
For the grass mix, shoots will appear after approximately 10 days, and a good cover of grass will be established within 4 weeks. The biotextile fabric itself will degrade over a period of four to five months, by which time the roots will be properly established into the soil. The nutrients in the fabric will also help to sustain the plants, so nothing is wasted.

The wildflower mix takes a little longer to establish itself and grow than the grass. However, the seed mix will give a variety of flowers throughout the summer months. At the end of their flowering season, cuttings and seeds can be taken from the flowers and the area re-sown to provide flowers for the next year.
