Protecto-Joint

Wallbarn Protecto-joint offers the ultimate solution for waterproofing and protecting expansion joints. It can be used for buried joints, roof expansion joints in conjunction with waterproof membranes, and upstand flashing to provide continuity of waterproofing between horizontal and vertical surfaces where differential movement is anticipated.

We have developed a complete system of joint protection and waterproofing with strategic partners, and announce the launch of a full design and supply-and-fix service in 2006.

Wallbarn Protecto-joint is a tough, highly flexible butyl rubber membrane manufactured by Wallbarn. It possesses high movement and elongation properties and can tolerate direct contact with hot materials such as mastic asphalt and hot rubber solutions.

It is ideal for use in trafficked surfaces and sealing joints in decks where continuous surfacing of asphalt occurs, and can be bonded to good concrete and mastic asphalt using Wallbarn Pro-bond. It is essential that applicators use only approved products from Wallbarn in conjunction with Wallbarn Protecto-joint.

Wallbarn Protecto-joint is manufactured as 2mm or 3mm thick pre-formed sheet; 200mm, 300mm or 400mm wide.

Because of its flexible nature, Wallbarn Protecto-joint has the distinct advantage of being used across upstand joints and through specific details without affecting its waterproofing and movement properties. It can be used where the joints are irregular or misaligned, and can be permanently immersed in water.

It can be manipulated and bonded to the deck surface or cut and shaped, and bonded to itself extremely effectively without affecting its elasticity or strength.

Wallbarn Protecto-joint can also be folded into C or S bends inside the joint if required due to its flexible nature.

Because Wallbarn Protecto-joint is vulcanized, it cannot be welded or heat bonded.

Application

  • Ensure that the area is fully cured, sound and free from debris. All nibs and spots on the surface beneath should be removed and the area sanded to ensure a textured, smooth surface.
    • Concrete should be grit blasted or rigorously brushed to ensure all laitance, grease and dirt is removed. Any crumbling concrete must be repaired and cured.
    • Steel is best prepared by grit-blasting.
    • For mastic asphalt surfaces, Pro-Coat Adhesive must be used. Please contact Wallbarn for full application instructions.
  • The area should be dry and frost-free.
  • If the area is newly laid and clean, a primer is not normally necessary.
  • The cavity should be packed with a suitable joint filler.
  • Wallbarn Protecto-joint MUST be wiped with a solvent to remove all traces of grease or oil on the rubber surface. This is to ensure that the bond to the adhesive is not affected in any way.
  • Wallbarn supplies a Xylene solvent which is poured onto a cloth and wiped onto each side of the rubber where that rubber will come into contact with the adhesive (breathing protection should be worn when handling Xylene).
  • Simply roll out the rubber strip and wipe each side with the Xylene solvent, leave for a couple of minutes for the solvent to evaporate, and roll the rubber back up onto the spool.
  • Ensure that the rubber is laid within 4 hours to gain the benefit of the clean surface.
  • The two part epoxy adhesive, Wallbarn Pro-bond, is mixed thoroughly for 2 minutes with a low speed paddle drill and placed along both sides of the joint approximately 50mm wide and 1mm thick with a trowel.
  • Wallbarn Protecto-joint is cut to length and pressed firmly into the adhesive
    • Where applicators are using Wallbarn Protecto-joint (such as the 200mm wide joint)with punched edges, the adhesive will ooze out of the holes in the edge of the joint, and can be trowelled across the upper surface of the joint to ensure a positive bond is achieved.
    • Where applicators are using other types of Wallbarn Protecto-joint they must ensure that the rubber is smoothed out to create a level upper surface.
  • Allow 2 hours for the adhesive to cure.
  • Joint sealant for horizontal expansion joints is a hot pour compound (in most applications – please contact Wallbarn with specific specification of the joint) which is presented as a block or powder. The block is broken into pieces and melted in a suitable heating vessel to the correct temperature of approximately 190°C.
  • The liquid is poured slowly and carefully into the joint using a watering can (or similar vessel) up to a maximum width of 25mm in one “bead” or run. It must then be allowed to cool fully.
  • Joint sealant must not be allowed to drop below a temperature of 95°C and must never be reheated.
  • Vertical expansion joints are covered using a gunned sealant. Please contact Wallbarn for further details.

Only Wallbarn approved adhesive, joint sealants, primers and waterstops should be used with Wallbarn Protecto-joint.

Wallbarn Protecto-joint was launched in January 2006 as a complete system and has been used successfully on a number of high profile projects for clients including Westminster Council and the London Underground. By working with Wallbarn, and our list of approved contractors and design specialists, developers can ensure a properly waterproofed, properly protected expansion joint system to their structures.
