Geotextile Fabrics
 Geotextile fabrics are materials that are utilized in foundations, earth, rocks & soil. You may also see geotextile fabrics being referred to as erosion control cloth, filter fabric, support membrane & civil engineering cloth. This fabric is used in a variety of applications. Geotextile fabrics are available in both woven & unwoven.
The woven style of geotextile fabrics are strong & do not stretch very much even when force is applied. It is made by weaving synthetic fabrics together. It is usually constructed of polypropylene or polyester. Other materials that are used are nylon, polyvinylidene chloride, polyethylene & fibreglass. There are three different types of woven geotextiles. They are slit tape, monofilament & multifilament. The slit tape is produced by slitting sheets of solid or extruded film & then weaving them together. A monofilament fabric is woven from string-like fabric & the mutifilament fabric is produced by fine filaments that are adhered to each other by intermingling or twisting the strands.
Woven geotextile fabrics are particularly well suited to applications such as:
- helping to stabilise & strengthen
- helping to prevent unevenness in driveways
- suitable for site access & tracks
- prevention of the mixing of construction layers
- acting as an effective filter layer in drainage applications
Strong, nonwoven, flexible geotextile fabrics that are made from polypropylene fibres are designed to allow water through whilst separating & stabilising construction layers.
Geotextile fabrics also have tremendous value when used in demolition as when combined with steel wire fencing, they can help to contain explosive debris.
