Creating a Longer Lasting Decking Surface

The use of composite decking can help to ensure that your decking lasts a lifetime and thanks to the team at iDecking, the introduction of a new recycled composite decking system called DURO, solutions are now more environmentally friendly than ever before.

What is Recycled Composite Decking?

For decking to be accurately described as being ‘eco friendly’ it must be produced in a way that does not negatively impact the environment.

Standard composite decking can range from materials such as fibreglass to plastic whilst the majority are mixtures of plastic and wood fibres.

Widely acknowledged to last longer than other forms of decking, they also require significantly less maintenance.

Thanks to iDecking Revolution, a leading company in terms of innovations in decking systems and materials, new eco-friendly recycled composite decking solutions have now hit the market!

What are Duro Timber Decking Tiles?

DURO is a brand new material developed by iDecking Revolution. Even though its formula is kept as a secret, DURO’s main ingredient is Rice Husk; a by-product in the processing of rice. This husk, when blended together with virgin polymers, makes this an incredibly versatile, strong and durable material.

DURO looks and feels extremely natural, it can be stained or treated for an extra level of protection using any colour available from iDecking. DURO is 100% recyclable and offers a completely eco-friendly solution to all decking projects.

DURO decking can be installed both on the EasyClick and EasyChange systems. Boards are available both with flat or anti-slip grooved surfaces.

Which are the highlights of DURO material?

  • Eco-Friendly – 100% Recyclable
  • Low maintenance
  • Extremely stable and durable
  • Can be treated and/or stained as you like
  • No splinters, barefoot walking is welcome!
  • Weatherproof & Waterproof
  • UV ray resistant
  • Insect and termite proof
  • B1 Class fire resistant

Introducing the Duro Excellence Range

The DURO Excellence line brings our signature composite material to the next level. It provides the most natural looking and durable coloured decking boards available. The Virgin PVC and Rice Husk compound is coloured before extrusion, this helps to guarantee colour uniformity and grain consistency all the way through each board. This makes the decking boards colour much more resistant in case of scratches and fading if compared to stained ones.

Six of them are finished with a wood grain effect making each board look unique! As it is for regular DURO, DURO Excellence is an Eco-Friendly and Natural feeling material. DURO Excellence even maintains the awesome effect of real wood grain and patina with time. DURO Excellence is available for both EasyClick and Easy Change iDecking installation systems.

Duro Excellence - All colours - from left to right - Moor Oak, Dark Choco, Denim, Terra, Saddle, Teak, Ivory White

Taking a Closer Look at Green Roofs

In the recent years, you have probably heard of the term ‘green roof’ or ‘living roof’ and probably wondered what it refers. Well, a living roof is a roof covered in grasses, flowers, turf, and sometimes even trees and shrubs.

A Storied History

In many parts of the world living room has been part of home building for thousands of years. Societies such as the Babylonians, Norse and even early en1European pioneers in Canada have used green roofs for thousands of years. There are other great examples including green roofs in Celtic Britain, New Grange in Ireland and Scottish crofts, as well.

The historical living roofs main purpose was to provide insulation. Modern living roof however provide both insulation as well as a way of building more environmentally friendly homes.

The current version of the living roof has its roots in 1970s Germany. There, architects there were having trouble creating and maintaining strong roofing against strong wind and rainstorms, the country faced. One of the proposed solutions was the installation of green roofs whereby the plants roots and soil would absorb the excess rainwater and protect the roofing foundation.

Widespread Introduction

By the 1980s, the green roofs were particularly widespread in Germany but quite literally unknown in the rest of the world. The rest of the world came to adopt green roofing in the late 1990s because of a rising interest in green architecture. Today many cities all over the world have many great examples of green roofs whose owners are always eager to give tours.

Keeping Good Company With Your New Green Roof

There can be little doubt that the numerous benefits of installing a green roof onto your property are now well documented.

With countries such as France introducing new legislation stating that all new buildings in commercial zones across the country must now be at least partially covered by either plants or solar panels, the movement towards widespread green roofing installations is becoming irresistible.

Please Note – Many public sector buildings in UK also have green roofs as a standard inclusion in the design.

Keeping Good Company

Along with Governments introducing new legislation, many major companies are taking it on themselves to make the move towards creating an M-Trayenvironmentally friendly building and companies simply do not come much bigger than Facebook who has embraced the idea.

“Facebook didn’t hold back in its expansion of the company’s Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters.

The 430,000 square ft.-building, known as MPK 20, can hold up to 2,800 people and is certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, according to sources familiar with the project. It includes a 9-acre green roof — that’s roughly the size of seven football fields — with a half-mile walking loop and over 400 trees.”

How Are Green Roofing Systems Constructed

It’s not really a matter of colour, although many green roofs are indeed green. The ‘green’ actually refers to plant life and vegetation, which is supported on top of the roof for a few different reasons. Growing plants on your roof might sound like a crazy idea, but it presents a myriad of benefits to the modern homeowner, with increased energy efficiency being a primary advantage.

Typically, a roof is designed with a slope and a point. This is intended to keep water off of the roof. The water rolls along the slopes, into the gutters, and down the drains. However, a green roof is slightly different in construction and function. It’s actually built to trap the water on the roof. That water is used to fuel the plant life growing above.

How Easy Is It To Instruct a Green Roof?

Throwing grass seeds will not create a sustainable green roof as the grass needs a higher level of dense, high nutrient soil to survive and the roof will How Are Green Roofing Systems Constructednot be able to take the weight in most cases. Plus, it will become waterlogged and stale over time. A green roof needs to be free draining at all times in order to survive long term and thanks to the introduction of the new improved M-TRAY® modular green roofing system to the UK market has made it easier than ever before.

This pre-grown sedum green roof product is supplied in easy-to-handle plastic tray units.

A fully established, mature green roof can be installed quickly and easily on difficult-to-access roofs by hand without the mess and disruption associated with traditional extensive green roof systems.

This trademarked design incorporates strong tray units measuring 500 x 500 x 100mm, made from injection moulded recycled polypropylene. The frame itself is 2mm thick throughout, and is designed to tolerate significantly more than the 15-20kg saturated weight produced when the units are fully loaded with substrate and sedum plants.

The M-TRAY® modules are delivered to site on shrink wrapped pallets. Because these are live products, it is essential that they are unpacked as soon as possible and given access to light and water. The plants will suffer if they are left palletised longer than 24 hours after delivery.

Offering Energy Efficient Qualities

Whilst there can be little doubt that the installation of a green roof can greatly improve the aesthetics of a standard roof, the benefits do not stop there.

Key information regarding green roofing systems:

  • Green roofs are beneficial to the local environment as they attract wildlife, absorb dust, noise and pollutants and offer localised ambient cooling
  • A green roof traps some water on the roof but must always allow rainwater to run out of the system so proper drainage should be built into the system
  • A green roof is not designed to do the opposite to a traditional roof. It will absorb heat and water but it is in addition to insulation and waterproofing, not an alternative
  • The roof has always been a topic of debate section: bitumen roofs can absorb a huge amount of heat during the day. The surface temperatue of asphalt waterproofing membranes can be as much as double that of the ambient temperature

You Can Now Prolong the Lifespan of Your Decking Area

Duro Excellence

The versatility and practicality of any decking system is entirely dependent on the quality and the durability of the materials that are used when constructing the deck, along with the ability to regularly maintain the surface.

Thanks to the iDecking Revolution and the creation of the DURO decking board, a new decking system is available which offers both waterproof and splinter proof qualities.

Even though its formula is kept as a secret DURO’s main ingredient is Rice Husk; a by-product in the processing of rice. This husk, when blended 2015-09-28_0824together with virgin polymers, makes this an incredibly versatile, strong and durable material.

Please Note – The rice husk, which makes up 50% of the Duro, is a completely waste product and would be burnt if it wasn’t used in the manufacture of this material, which causes CO2 and pollutant gases; so using it is a major environmental benefit

Which are the highlights of DURO material?

  • Eco-Friendly – 100% Recyclable
  • Low maintenance
  • Extremely stable and durable
  • Can be treated and/or stained as you like
  • No splinters, barefoot walking is welcome!
  • Weatherproof & Waterproof
  • UV ray resistant
  • Insect and termite proof
  • B1 Class fire resistant

Prolonging The Lifespan of the Decking

One of the primary concerns relating to the installation of a new decking system to any outdoor area relates to the materials downgrading over time and the surface beginning to splinter.

Not only does this look unsightly, a splintered surface will significantly reduce the lifespan of the decking and can also be dangerous.

There can be no doubt that splinters need to be avoided wherever possible and if your decking becomes warped or cracked, there is every chance that it will lead to more splinters over time.

The Perfect Solution

Whilst many decking systems may be in the process of failing through moisture intrusion, (one of the most common causes of splintering, the iDecking Revolution is delighted to announce the launch of a new splinter proof decking system which offers a variety of significant benefits when compared to other current decking systems, not least the fact that it is splinter proof.

DURO looks and feels extremely natural, it can be stained or treated for an extra level of protection using any colour available from iDecking. DURO is also a uniform colour throughout its makeup, unlike other composites, so if it is scratched it can be sanded down around the scratch and will not reveal ugly white streaks

DURO decking can be installed both on the EasyClick and EasyChange systems. Boards are available both with flat or anti-slip grooved surfaces.

There’s Been a ‘Revolution’ In the Decking Industry

iDecking Installation

The introduction of the iDecking EasyClick system to the market will remove the need to spend all day on their knees during an installation whilst also drastically reduce installation time!

EasyClick is the innovative system which allows you to install iDecking Revolution boards simply using your feet. No need to use any nails, screws, drills, spacers or “obsolete” clips.

The EasyClick system helps ensure quick and simple trouble-free installation.

How does EasyClick system work?

Say goodbye to wasting your time aligning each decking board since our EasyClick system automatically aligns it for you!IMG_0219

EasyClick is essentially comprised of an understructure “rail system” which comes with pre-installed and pre-spaced patented EasyClick nylon clips. Our patented grooved decking boards are then simply pressed and locked in place.

What are the highlights of EasyClick system?

  • Decking installation up to 5 times faster than traditional deck building
  • Boards require Zero screws, nails or other fasteners
  • Drastic reduction of installation errors
  • “Effortless” installation
  • Doesn’t cause water stagnation
  • Increased structural integrity and strength
  • Self blocking and Self aligning system

EasyClick understructure “rails” should be a maximum of 40 cm apart, locking each decking board on four different points increasing the strength of the entire floor/wall structure. Special EasyClick clips are also available to serve any decking design.

Please Note – The rails should be a maximum of 40 cm apart. Wallbarn recommends 35 cm although 40 cm is possible.

Introducing Another ‘Revolution’

iJack is a true REVOLUTION in decking field! An innovative connector that eliminates the expansion/contraction gap between composite deck boards.

Acting as the perfect hinge and separator the iJack will combat the fact that decking can sometimes expand in one direction and then contract in the same direction; so the material starts to “creep” in the same direction over time. Not only does the iJack keep the gap between the boards the same size, preventing the gaps closing and the boards lifting, but it stops the creep also.

This innovative system is patented by iDecking Revolution and perfectly works with both iDecking EasyClick and EasyChange revolutionary installation systems

A Closer Look at the First Completed Project

The first UK project involved the installation of the EasyClick system into a private residential balcony in Warlingham, Surrey. Because the installation was to take place on top of a hard resin waterproofing membrane, it was vital that there were no fixings going through the roof.

To help ensure there were no issues with the sloping roof level, the EasyClick was installed onto Wallbarn adjustable pedestals to bring the sloping roof level flat.
