The Storied History of Green Roofs

In the recent years, you have probably heard of the term ‘green roof’ or ‘living roof’ and probably wondered what it refers. Well, a living roof is a roof covered in grasses, flowers, turf, and sometimes even trees and shrubs.

A Storied History

In many parts of the world living room has been part of home building for thousands of years. Societies such as the Babylonians, Norse and even early European pioneers in Canada have used green roofs for thousands of years.

The historical living roofs main purpose was to provide insulation. Modern living roof however provide both insulation as well as a way of building more environmentally friendly homes.

The current version of the living roof has its roots in 1970s Germany. There, architects there were having trouble creating and maintaining strong roofing against strong wind and rainstorms, the country faced. One of the proposed solutions was the installation of green roofs whereby the plants roots and soil would absorb the excess rainwater and protect the roofing foundation.

Widespread Introduction

By the 1980s, the green roofs were particularly widespread in Germany but quite literally unknown in the rest of the world. The rest of the world came to adopt green roofing in the late 1990s because of a rising interest in green architecture. Today many cities all over the world have many great examples of green roofs whose owners are always eager to give tours.

Installing a Modular Green Roofing System Has Never Been Easier

Concerns regarding potential difficulties relating to the installation of green roofing systems are often high on the list of reasons why people have delayed turning to this highly beneficial solution for improving the qualities of their property.

However, with the introduction of a new and improved M-TRAY® at 2016’s Ecobuild, installation has truly never been easier than it is right now. In fact the installation is so easy, that you no longer need to turn to the skills of a landscaping contractor as with a little guidance, you will comfortably be able to install your very own green roofing system with the minimum amount of knowledge and effort.

Easy To Handle

Amongst the many improvements which have been made to the M-TRAY® system is the fact that the modules are now even easier to handle than How Are Green Roofing Systems Constructedbefore.

With improved packaging and a refined shape, one module can comfortably be carried by one person without the risk of the contents spilling out during the installation process.

Simple Installation Process

To complete the installation process, simply line up the M-TRAY® modules next to one another and secure clips (there are two clips moulded onto two sides of each module) across the indented section on its neighbour. It works almost like a jigsaw.

For the best results installers should work from the centre of the roof deck and work outwards towards the perimeter. This will mean any cuts to modules around objects and at the edges are consistent on both sides. The sedum will grow across the joints quickly, covering up the plastic edges.

Continue laying and fixing the modules together until the whole area is completed. Mechanical fixings are not generally necessary for most flat roof / podium deck applications, so no sharp points need to go through into the deck, creating less risk to the waterproofing. For areas with a slight pitch or projects at high altitude or in areas of very high wind, cables fitted across the tops of the modules or mechanical fixings may be required – it is best to consult with the Qs or architect.

Removing A Common Flaw From Standard Decking Systems

iDecking have spent many years perfecting an innovative, environmentally friendly, non-splinter timber decking solution offering all the good looks of the real thing but without the flaw of other products.

One of the primary concerns relating to the installation of a new decking system to any outdoor area relates to the materials downgrading over time and the surface beginning to splinter.

Not only does this look unsightly, a splintered surface will significantly reduce the lifespan of the decking and can also be dangerous.close up mini mega with iDeck easyClick board

Creating a Versatile and Practical Solution

The versatility and practicality of any decking system is entirely dependent on the quality and the durability of the materials that are used when constructing the deck, along with the ability to regularly maintain the surface.

DURO is a brand new material developed by iDecking Revolution. Even though its formula is kept as a secret, as we stated earlier, DURO’s main ingredient is Rice Husk; a by-product in the processing of rice. This husk, when blended together with virgin polymers, makes this an incredibly versatile, strong and durable material.

Please Note – DURO is Eco-Friendly – 100% Recyclable!

Looking and feeling completely natural, DURO can be stained or treated for an extra level of protection using any colour available from iDecking.

Eliminating a Common Cause of Splintering2015-09-28_0845_001

Whilst many decking systems may be in the process of failing through moisture intrusion, (one of the most common causes of splintering, the iDecking Revolution is delighted to announce the launch of a new splinter proof decking system which offers a variety of significant benefits when compared to other current decking systems, not least the fact that it is splinter proof. Splinters often appear around the screw holes initially, and as there are no visible screws on the surface, this is not an issue for iDecking.

Such is the difference in these newly made decking tiles in regard to strength and durability, some of the tests which have been completed are almost unbelievable.

As a splinter-free decking material, it is absolutely ideal for pools and areas where children will are likely to be present.

If you have any concerns regarding the durability of these new decking systems, we believe that the following video will quickly put these to bed!
