How To Lift Decking Away From Standing Water

With the inclement weather in the UK, along with the increasing amount of decking being installed at pool side areas, the need to ensure it can be lifted away from standing water cannot be ignored.

Wallbarn has taken notice of this and developed a fast, simple and durable system of suspended deck finishing applied to timber as well as paving slabs.

The Perfect Tools!

Most roofs are built-to-falls for drainage purposes. Where the level between the door threshold and the drainage outlet is significant, where the roof falls in more than one direction, where large drops or channels are present, or where there are multiple and complicated changes in the fall and levels across the roof – then the ASP range of Adjustable Support Pedestals are the perfect tools.

This is a suspended system – the weight of the slab holds everything in place.

Wallbarn’s ASP adjustable support pads are designed with a telescopic stem which is wound up and down to achieve a completely flat upper  surface. Changes to height can be made whilst the slab is in place. This saves a great deal of time and labour.

The rainwater runs between and under the slabs, so there is no standing water left on the surface. This improves health & safety as it makes the paved area less slippery.

Green Roof Planning – What Did You Need To Know?

When you start to think about installing a green roof design on to your property, there are a few things which you need to take into account.

What is a Green Roof?

First things first though, do you actually know what a green roof is??

A green roof is really a roof top garden and can be anything from a two inch covering of vegetation to a fully fledged accessible garden with flowers, shrubs and even trees.

The Planning Stage

Thanks to the M-TRAY® modular green roofing system, the installation of green roofing systems have never been easier. However, no corners should be cut in the planning stage to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible.

Whenever you are planning the design of your green roof you need to think about a few details including:

  • What type of drainage system will you require? This is incredibly important and something which needs to be well thought out and designed before the Green Roof Design Considerationswork starts. A well designed green roof can be a tremendous asset to a property with terrific insulation properties helping to keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter which in turn helps to reduce heating and cooling bills.
  • What are the goals for your green roof? Is it simply for environmental purposes or do you wish to create a space which you can really enjoy to the full?
  • What visual requirements do you have for your green roof? This is another major consideration to be thought through in the design stages. Green roofs are aesthetically pleasing and can really help to lift a neighbourhood so it is important to think about these issues in the beginning.
  • What is the level of required access? Although all green roofs need to have some access for maintenance purposes some of them really are roof top gardens and there for the family to enjoy. You need to think about how much access will be needed when you start on your green roof design.
  • What is the load of structure support? Every structure will have the maximum amount of weight it can support so this is extremely important to discover and work around.
  • What budget do you have? The creation of a green roof is initially more expensive than traditional roofing materials but there are many benefits to make up for it. The savings to the environment and on energy costs can be tremendous in time. The price you pay will largely depend upon the style of green roof you opt for.

After answering all of these questions you will have some idea of the best design for a green roof on your property. They are becoming increasingly popular and can provide a fabulous feature for your property just so long as you have thought things through properly.

Looking extremely strong and healthy, the installation during the height of summer offers a major advantage over the method of using rolled-up sedum blankets, where the plants get damaged very easily.

What is the M-Tray?

M-TRAY® is a ready-grown, fully established sedum, sedum-and-wildflower or wildflower-only green roof loaded into a portable tray, for easier installation of green roofs.

The major benefit of M-TRAY® is flexibility. Getting to the roof is not a disruptive and costly process, which is a huge advantage over loose lay systems. It is simply not possible to loose lay roll-out systems layer-by-layer on some roof areas due to access restrictions. , M-TRAY® can reach the roofs other systems cannot reach.

Introducing The A15 Drainage Channel

Does standing water on your patio take an age to drain away? Or are you laying a new patio or drive? Wallbarn’s NEW HDPE A15 Drainage Channel is suitable for all pedestrian and lightly trafficked areas.

Protecto-Drain Drainage Channel

Designed with the goal of collecting surface water from paved or asphalted areas, the A15 Drainage Channel from Wallbarn will help to move the water away towards an underground drainpipe or escape route.

Fully optimised for stability, discharge capacity and longevity, this anti-slip, hard-wearing galvanised steel grate maintains structural integrity across the area, so foot traffic and very light vehicles can pass over the drain without issue.

Why Might You Need an A15 Drainage Channel?

The majority of patios, pathways and drives are built with a slight slope (or ‘fall’) to help ensure that surface water can easily drain away. However, on occasion, this may not be enough to guarantee the water will drain away (especially if your paved surface area is particularly large or you are based in an area with heavy clay soil).

In these cases, the installation of an A15 drainage channel can prove to offer the most effective method of collecting surface water whilst directing it to the required dispersal point (typically leading to an existing water drain or into a soakaway).

Designed For Ease of Installation

The A15 drainage channel simply slots in front of the building entrance or within the paved / asphalt area and provides an un-obstructed channel cross-section. Each individual channel clips together for fast and simple on-site fabrication. It is very easy to cut on areas where a part-metre length is required. All slots and measurement grooves run the whole way through the channel so side bars can also be installed into cut channels successfully.

Please click here for more details on the A15 drainage channel, including technical specifications. We are always on hand to answer any questions that you may have so please either e-mail us at info@wallbarn.com or call us on Tel. Introducing 7mm Rubber Pads for Paving and Decking

7mm Rubber Discs For Decking and Paving

If your construction project is facing problems due to a restricted height threshold but still needs to raise paving or decking to a level which offers sufficient drainage, Wallbarn’s introduction of a new rubber pad for paving could offer the ideal solution.

Our new 7mm thick rubber disc for paving complete with integrated spacing lugs has been designed to lift paving/decking off the surface by 7mm, making it ideal for retro-fit projects and areas with very low height thresholds.

Tough & Durable

Our 7mm rubber pads are extremely tough and durable and offer the significant benefits of not becoming brittle in cold weather. They are absolutely ideal for any area 7mm Rubber Discs For Decking and Pavingwhere a tight height threshold is present, for example, on refurbishment projects.

In certain circumstances it may be easier to simply overlay the existing surface with a new layer of suspended paving or decking rather than take everything up, and with the 7mm discs this is possible.

Effective Drainage Properties

The upper surface of the pad contains drainage channels which run out to the edges of the circular disc, meaning that rainwater will drain off the upper surface of the disc effectively.

The plastic positioning lugs are incorporated into the pad as they plug into a small hole in the centre of the pad or disc. This ensures that the paving slabs are clearly separated from each other with regular spacing between them, and are held securely in place.

Suitable For Paving & Decking

The 7mm disc is suitable for use with paving slabs and also timber decking. The TD headpiece has side bars 60mm apart, meaning a standard 2” / 50mm wide timber joist can be placed between the bars. The joists will form a framework structure for the decking system and the decking planks are fixed to that framework.

The product is sold as a two part unit, the rubber disc and positioning lug (available for either paving or timber decking) supplied together.

Since the discs are made from rubber, they have a soft, flexible, hard wearing, non-slip profile; which means they protect the membrane beneath from damage. Rubber will also offer acoustic properties and create a separation layer from the deck.

No Mechanical Fixing Required

As with all the Wallbarn supports range there is no mechanical fixing required, the surface is secured by the weight of the slab. This cuts down weight on the roof and also the hassle and mess of laying slabs into mortar. This leads to easier, cheaper and faster installation and makes post-installation site inspection or leak detection much easier.

The Morgan Stanley Garden for Great Ormond Street Hospital

The team at Wallbarn were delighted to donate a number of fixed height pedestals to help designers creating a garden project being displayed at the Chelsea Flower Show recently.

We are now very proud to find out that not only did the project, designed by Chris Beardshaw projects win the gold medal yesterday, it is also due to be dismantled and reassembled at Great Ormond Street Hospital shortly.

[nggallery id=36]

The Morgan Stanley Garden for Great Ormond Street Hospital

The Morgan Stanley Garden for Great Ormond Street Hospital has been designed to feature at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, before it is sited at its permanent home at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The new garden will provide a much needed, private and reflective space for parents and families of the children undergoing treatment at the hospital. The enclosed nature of the hospital site has shaped and informed the planting and schematics for the garden.

Designer Chris Beardshaw is creating a rich, green and verdant woodland scheme, sprinkled with pockets of colourful planting, bursting through the tree canopy and perennial understory.

Creating a Plant Rich Area

The planting in the garden provides a plant-rich area of woodland diversity, featuring a wide range of perennials for dappled shade and with a collection of hedges, mixed topiary and mature trees, which all provide a naturally rich environment.

The garden features a reflective water feature and a main structure inspired by a Japanese azumaya (summer house), designed in three interlocking sections; each section framing views of the garden.

Decking Installation Has Never Been Easier!

iDecking Revolution have developed a modular system which has been designed to last and will perform just as well as any other system out there but has the extra added benefit of being able to be installed up to 5 times quicker than any other current system.

This prefabricated system has been developed to prevent and fix all the main issues linked to both composite and wood decking and saves time, money and reduces waste.

What is this System Called?

EasyClick is the innovative system which allows you to install iDecking Revolution boards simply using your feet. No need to use any nails, screws, close up mini mega with iDeck easyClick boarddrills, spacers or “obsolete” clips. The EasyClick system helps ensure a quick and simple trouble free installation.

EasyClick is essentially comprised of an understructure “rail system” which comes with pre-installed and pre-spaced patented EasyClick nylon clips. Our patented grooved decking boards are then simply pressed and locked in place.

Fast Installation

One of the most frustrating aspects of the installation of modular decking systems is the fact that installation often required hundreds or sometimes thousands of screws to complete.

In fact the installing systems patented by iDeck ensure that you decking can be added without the need for any screws, screwdrivers, glues, spacers, IMG_0228alignment lines or any of the other traditional ways that compromises both aesthetic and technical results.

This modular decking system can be installed directly onto almost any existing surface. Simply construct the pre-fabricated frames, fit the supports and adjust heights to match uneven surfaces. Then insert the pre-fabricated deck panels. Use a concrete paver when positioning over soft surfaces.

Other Benefits

  • Boards require Zero screws, nails or other fasteners
  • Drastic reduction of installation errors
  • “Effortless” installation
  • Doesn’t cause water stagnation
  • Increased structural integrity and strength
  • Self blocking and Self aligning system
