An Insight Into Riverlight

A development comprising of six pavilions, rising in height, all with a North-South orientation, Riverlight contains 806 apartments ranging from suites to three-bedroom penthouses. In addition to such a wide range of accommodation, the development has a vibrant mix of leisure and retail facilities at street level.

Stunning Development

This is a stunning development in an area soon set to redefine the geography of London. The area has a new American Embassy (surely leading to a new international hub within close proximity of Westminster), the proposed extension of the Northern Line via a new Battersea Tube Station and the creation of Linear Park – a new green landscaped park spanning from Vauxhall to Battersea Power Station. This is a stunning development in a fantastic location, less than a mile from the Houses of Parliament and just a short hop across the river to Chelsea.

Our Role in the Project

We are very proud to have been working on St George Wharf for many years, and this project was the start of the regeneration of the area. The whole of this area is being developed with a series of major skyscrapers being planned or actually constructed now.

We are currently supplying support pads for paving and decking, chiefly for the balconies and terraces on the private blocks but we would like to extend our presence on the new developments with some of our ground products, including as the geotextiles for landscaping and soil stabilisation (it is an area with a high water table, being on old swamp land); Protecto-board for waterproofing membranes, temporary protection during the construction process, basement construction and tanking; Protecto-drain for tanking, basements and subterranean drainage and green roof products and services as there are a lot of roof gardens, ground landscaping and green roofs being planned.

Pedestal Rail System – The Key To Futureproofing?

An image of the pedestal rail system with Megapads

The brand new pedestal rail system from Wallbarn can be used for a variety of substrates including porcelain, concrete and natural stone pavers.

Ideal for set-ups with large-sized stoneware tiles, the pedestals rail system provides stability and finishes that have not been thought of so far with ceramic stonewares.‎

Constructed from lightweight, resistant aluminium, together with the supports, it guarantees a capacity and solidity that cannot be compared to that without the joist.‎

Advantages

These support rails created a structurally robust “floating floor” system offering a variety of post-installation benefits as they can be lifted for access or re-laid at the end of the paving’s life.

  • Easy installation
  • Durable
  • Lightweight
  • Grid system for increased strength

Durable and easy to install, the pedestal rail system can play a key role in helping to ensure paved surfaces look great for many years to come.

The rails reduce the need for pedestals which greatly increases the speed of installation.

Suitable For

  • Decking Tiles
  • Natural / Porcelain Tile Products

By using a framework created from our pedestal rail system and laying the tiles using pedestals and rails, extra support will be provided to the structure.

Innovative New Modular System

This new innovative modular system will allow you to lay ceramic planks, even long ones, with the minimum of effort allowing for aesthetic solutions which were not previously achievable with this new format.

Benefits of the rail system include:

  • Extra support
  • Can support very thin tiles across the whole edge
  • Grid framework results in faster installation because flat levels can be achieved easier
  • The modular system ensures that repairs are easier

Install Boards of Any Shape And Size

This new type of pedestal rail system is suitable to help install decking boards and stonewares or slabs made of stone and ceramics, of any shape and size.‎

Previously, the raised laying of tile floors and decking in any outdoor area could only be completed by utilising a mixture of complex stands and accessories.‎ Even with the most complete mixed systems, which allow adequate accessories to be used, installation with joists has always been unthought of for ceramic and stone products, especially if they are large or have particular shapes.‎

However, the introduction of the pedestal rail system to the market ensures that outdoor raised floors can be created with boards and a mixed top finish.‎

For more information about the rail system, please contact us on Tel. No. 020 8916 2222 today.

How To Create A Suspended Decking System

Timber Tiles

Tropical Hardwood tiles for suspended decking solutions on flat roofs, terraces and walkways.

Natural, Attractive Finish of Timber Decking

By using suspended Wallbarn Timber Paving Tiles, installers combine the natural, attractive finish of timber decking with the speed and ease of laying paving slabs.

Traditionally laying timber decking directly onto these deck surfaces led to additional costs of employing specialist carpenters. Laying timber joists directly onto the waterproofing membrane also risked damage over time. Wallbarn Timber Paving Tiles offer the ideal solution. The weight of the tile will hold the system in place.

Suspended System

This suspended system avoids having to fix anything onto the deck and lifts all the timber away from any standing water, avoiding the dangers of a slippery surface.

As everything is free-standing, the tiles can be taken up and replaced without disrupting the whole area, should the deck need to be inspected. Unsightly items such as drainage outlets, cables and pipes can be hidden beneath the tiles and accessed easily.

Why suspend your tiles on pedestals?

Four positioning lugs on each pedestal give tiling line for uniform placement

Tiles kept out of standing water avoiding slippery surfaces and wood rot

Suitable for any type of flat roof design or membrane

Can be used in conjunction with concrete slabs or natural stone

Can be laid in a straight line or a “chess board” pattern, subject to taste

We also supply FSC® certified timber as we have FSC® Chain of Custody (speak to rep)

Achieving Stunning Finishes

Stunning finishes can be achieved. The tiles can be laid in a straight line pattern or in a “chessboard” style, depending on the client’s wishes. We have a range of different timber available sourced from South America, chosen for their beauty and durability including Ipe and Cumaru. We can also supply FSC® certified timber as we have FSC® Chain of Custody (please speak to your Wallbarn representative).

Wide-Ranging Benefits

  • An ultra-low height threshold solution for the decking on flat roofs and terraces, these tiles are only 30mm thick
  • Combine the natural beauty of tropical hardwood with the speed and ease of laying paving slabs onto a structural surface
  • A long-lasting, attractive decking surface suitable for the British climate
  • Durable hardwood will last over 15 years
  • No specialist carpentry required
  • Pre-formed tiles are easy to cut for detailing
  • Avoid the risk of damage by laying the joist directly onto your membrane

Are Green Roofs The Key To Increased Productivity?

A close-up of completed M-Tray green roof installation in Hammersmith

Are you getting the feeling that your employees are feeling a little stuck at work? Could productivity levels use a boost? What if we told you that there was something that could be done for just 40 seconds which could make a positive impact on productivity?

Well, according to a new study, there is!

Installing A Green Roof

The installation of green roofs (a growing trend in the USA and already taking root throughout many other areas of the world) can make a significant difference?

Did you know? Last year Washington D.C. installed more than 1.2 million square feet of green roofs, according to Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.

Improving Accuracy & Productivity

The study found that subjects who took a 40-second break from a demanding task to look at an image of green roof were found to produce a higher level of performance and accuracy when they returned to the task according to a study from the University of Melbourne. Compared to other subjects who only viewed a concrete roof, they were also more consistently alert after the break.

“Our research was designed to test the boundaries of the attention-restoring capacity of nature,” says study researcher Kate Lee. “It was informed by previous research showing concentration boosts after lush nature exposure of minutes-to-hours. Our results are exciting, however, as they demonstrate that brief glimpses of a high-rise green roof scene can boost attention, compared to a traditional city scene.”

The Study Parameters

In the experiment, 150 students worked at computers and responded to numbers flashing up on their screens. Every time a number flashed up, they were required to press a key, unless the number was “3,” in which case they were to press nothing. In a press release, researchers described the task as “boring” and “attention-sapping.”

In the middle of the task, participants got a 40-second micro-break, in which they saw either a city scene with either a normal concrete roof or a flowering meadow green roof. Then they went on with the task, called a “Sustained Attention to Response Task” (SART). The green-roof viewers, as mentioned, seemed revitalised and more focused on the second half of the test. Results were recently published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology.

Researchers at the University of Melbourne are also interested in examining whether looking at workplace greening might enhance co-worker helpfulness and creativity.

The M-Tray® – Reaching Areas Other Green Roofs Cannot Reach Since 2014

An image of the May Fair Hotel in London. After the installation of a green roof|An image of a green roof installation at The May Fair Hotel in London|

Perceived accessibility issues and concerns relating to potential disruption during installation are common reasons for property owners assuming that the installation of a green roof may not be possible for their building. Particularly when it comes to retro-fitting a green roof onto a rooftop area.

However, thanks to the modular nature of the M-Tray®, we are able to provide a viable option for areas which are simply not suitable for other types of green roof installation.

Moving bags of aggregate-based substrate onto rooftops is fraught with risk – the aggregate goes everywhere and as it is so granular, it can damage waterproofing membranes very easily. Sedum blankets are also supplied rolled up, so the plants get damaged during the transport and installation process.

This is not the case with the M-Tray® modules.

The Perfect Example

The perfect example of how the M-Tray® offers the perfect solution for any almost area was a recent installation at the The May Fair Hotel, Mayfair, London

Because the M-Tray® is completely self-contained, we were able to carry them through the hotel on luggage trolleys up to the rooftop balcony without creating any mess with minimal disruption to complete the installation.

This allowed us to transform what was previously a fairly unsightly bitumen rooftop at a Mayfair hotel into a beautiful green space for guests to enjoy.

Fast and Effective Installation

Being so easy to transport, our M-Trays® were selected as the fastest and most efficient way of converting the unused space into a lush, green and aesthetically-pleasing space. The installation only took half a day with minimal disruption to guests.

Not only are our M-Trays® easy to install and transport, but they will also last in the long term. Every now and again throughout the year, you will need to do some maintenance e.g. weeding but apart from that, our trays are designed to be as self-sufficient as possible (they are designed to capture rainwater, releasing it gradually feeding the species set into our special substrate).

The modular units clip together allowing the plants to blend into a seamless, established and sustainable green roof.

The benefits of a modular green roof include:

Convenience and speed of installation

Future-proofing your roof

Instant results

Key Benefits

The M-Tray® offers the chance to install an instant green roof. Since the sedum are less shocked by the installation process, as soon as the trays are connected together the whole area is filled with well-established plants. They will start to grow straight away, forming a seamless layer of vegetation much faster.

Speed is also a major factor. It has been proven that green roofs constructed using M-Tray® are installed much faster than in traditional roll-out methods.

Access to the roof is future-proofed. If there are problems with the deck beneath or inspection is required, one M-Tray® or section can easily be lifted out without disruption to the whole roof.

Time for a bit of green roof TLC

Green roof maintenance: a quick guide

Our sedum trays need very little maintenance but there is no harm giving your green roof a little care at this time of year.

Green Roof

1. Pull out any weeds that may have got into the sedum.

  • only walk over the sedum if you can’t reach certain areas from the edge
  • sedum squashes down under foot but bounces back in days
  • collect any chips or broken pieces of sedum and scatter them over the green roof, they will re-root into the substrate

Green Roof

2. Remove dead stalks and vegetation from gutters and outlets
Prevent clogging and minimize fire hazards
3. Feed the vegetation with some all-purpose fertiliser

4. Easily plug bare patches
Bare patches can occasionally appear due to foraging wildlife e.g. birds or squirrels. You can fill these in by pulling out small clumps of plants from areas with surplus vegetation and plugging them into the bare soil. These plants will usually take within days.

Green Roof Installation – Planning Considerations

|An image of M-Tray pallets|An image of a green roof installation||

When planning a green roof, there are a few things you need to think about prior to installation:

What is the load of your structural support? Every structure will have a maximum weight it can support so this is extremely important to know and work around. Remember to allow for snow loading and unseasonal rainfall in weight calculations, as the green roof could hold / absorb considerable additional weight during high precipitation.

Roof pitch for optimum drainage: it is very important that your roof allows for free drainage into suitable drainage outlets so the plants do not become waterlogged. A well-designed green roof can be a tremendous asset to a building with terrific insulation properties, helping to keep it cool in the summer and warm in the winter, which in turn helps to reduce your building’s heating and cooling bills. Our modular green roof can be installed on roofs pitched at an angle of up to 15 degrees.

Light & wind – most sedum plants require direct sunlight or, at worst, semi-shaded conditions. They will not survive long-term in very shaded areas. Equally, areas of high wind or saline conditions will affect the type of plants you can use, so care should be taken to ensure the species are suitable for the conditions.

Purpose served by your green roof: is it simply for environmental purposes or do you wish to create a space which you can enjoy to the full? Are you seeking colour? Year-round greening? Bio-diversity?

Maintenance & irrigation – green roofs will require some maintenance at least twice a year, and during periods of very high temperatures and no rainfall.  irrigation is recommended. Try to allow for this in your plans.

What look are you hoping to achieve with your green roof? Green roofs can be aesthetically pleasing to a building’s inhabitants and visitors and really can help to lift a neighbourhood. So it is important to think about how you want your green roof to appear from the outset. Would you prefer just a sedum roof – albeit containing several varieties of sedum – or one with wildflower sown with the sedum? Do you want an aluminium edging surround? And a pebble surround? These and other accessories might be considered.

What budget do you have? The creation of a green roof is initially more expensive than traditional roofing materials but there are many benefits to make up for it. The savings to the environment and on energy costs can be tremendous over time. The price you pay will largely depend upon the style of green roof you opt for.

Pitch – if not a flat roof, consider your roof’s pitch…

What is the level of required access? Although all green roofs need to have some access for maintenance purposes, some of them really are roof top gardens and there for the family to enjoy. You need to think about how much access will be needed when you start on your green roof design.

After answering all of these, questions you will have some idea of the best design for a green roof on your property. They are becoming increasingly popular and can provide a fabulous feature for your property just so long as you have thought things through properly.

What makes the M-Tray® unique?

Our M-Tray® has been specifically designed to make sedum roof installation quick and easy – with minimum disruption to the plants and the structure they are going onto – and to provide a seamless, verdant finish – an instant and sustainable green roof.
