Introducing Splinter Proof & Slip Resistant Decking From Wallbarn

iDecking Installation

One of the major concerns facing many decking installation teams relates to safety, particularly when the completed deck is located near to a swimming pool, jacuzzi or near the beach and therefore likely to come into regular contact with water.

It really is not possible to overemphasise the importance of choosing a decking product which offers the longest lasting and safest solution for the particular project.

Thankfully, a new innovative decking product is available in the UK which offers both slip-resistant and splinter proof properties. This product is called iDecking.

The test is carried out via a pendulum testing machine in at least 2 directions, both in a dry state and in a wet state. The results are as follows:

3 Reasons Why Green Spaces In Cities Are More Important Than Ever

close up of a completed green roof installation

As cities around the world continue to grow, more and more people are moving into spaces which are already crowded.

With this being the case, what can we do to help transform these areas into healthy places to live? An increasing body of research tells us that we should be letting nature back in.

A tremendous article on the National History Museum website highlighted the following 3 reasons why creating green spaces is more important than ever.

  1. By 2050, 68% of the global population will live in cities. That’s 2.5 billion more people than today. In Europe, three out of four of us already live in urban areas, and the consequences of that are becoming clear.
  2. Researchers estimate that nine million people die every year as a direct result of air pollution. In London, two million people – of which 400,000 are children – are living in areas with toxic air.
  3. Green spaces in cities mitigate the effects of pollution and can reduce a phenomenon known as the urban heat island effect, which refers to heat trapped in built-up areas.

“Dr Cecil Konijnendijk is a Professor of Urban Forestry at the University of British Colombia (UBC). He studies the role of nature and green spaces in cities and towns, and how we can use the natural world to make urban environments healthier and more liveable.”

‘Research shows really clearly that we need nature in our surroundings. We need trees in our streets, plants in our gardens and flowers on our balcony. We need nature as our neighbour all the time.

‘We have a responsibility as human beings to take care of nature in our cities. In return, the benefits to our health would be huge.’

Can Green Roofs Help Reduce Flooding?

Green roofs can play a crucial role in helping cities cope with extreme rainfall.

In our opinion, we believe that green roofs offer optimum levels of green infrastructure due to the multi-functionality of modular green roof technology:

  • They can be retrofitted to existing buildings
  • They provide biodiverse space for urban wildlife
  • They enrich public spaces
  • There is also evidence that they can improve wellbeing and even productivity
  • Additionally, green roofs can make previously inhospitable places pleasant, and provide new outdoor space for office workers.

Highlighting The Positives

A fascinating article in the Huffington Post highlighted the positive impact the installation of a green roofing system can have in regards to effectively combating excess rainfall.

Southern California has been exposed to one of the worse droughts on record and despite a little respite with rain beginning to fall, thoughts have turned towards implementing long term measures designed to help limit the negative impact of extreme weather.

The article stated that:

“One of the best strategies for improving the city’s resilience and water efficiency is to mimic the way undisturbed environments receive rain and adjust the built landscape to reflect qualities found in nature. Prior to urbanization, the land that is now Los Angeles could easily absorb 95% of the rain that fell. Today, stormwater floods the city with polluted water–wreaks expensive havoc–and then disappears into the ocean.”

“Living roofs (aka green roofs) contribute to resilience in many other ways. Not only do they absorb and filter rainwater during storms, but they also reduce ambient temperatures during heat waves (which are projected to increase over the coming decades), through the process of natural evaporation. Drought tolerant plants grown on the roof provide insulation in summer and winter, keeping living spaces comfortable and reducing energy costs. Green roofs also pull carbon dioxide out of the air; they actively absorb one of the agents driving climate change in the first place.”

Made from recycled rice husk, it has exceptional anti-slip properties. In fact, we have just received a test score from the University of Hamburg for slipperiness, along with the extrusion it is 60 µ, perpendicular to the extrusion it is 58 µ (it looks like the requirement is > 36) – test number EN 15534-4.

These properties not only help to protect the structure to which it’s applied but also leads to a longer lifespan than other decking systems currently available.

‘Game-Changing’ benefits

Amongst the ‘game-changing’ benefits offered by this innovative modern type of waterproof decking, you will receive key features including:

    • Coloured before extrusion
    • Woodgrain effect – available in four colours
