As the weather begins to warm, now is the perfect time to start thinking about the introduction of a โ€ชgreen roofโ€ฌ for your property.

Below are just a few of the pictures from a recent project highlighting just how quickly, easily and effectively the M-TRAYยฎ modular green roof system can be installed.

Quick and Easy Installation

A fully established, mature green roof can be installed quickly and easily on difficult-to-access roofs by hand without the mess and disruption associated with traditional extensive green roof systems. M-Trayยฎ is available as a pre-established, mature sedum product or with a native wildflower mix.

Please Note –ย M-Trayยฎ has been designed and developed by Wallbarn in UK and is the subject of Community Registered Design (No. 002953943-0001) and US Design (Application No. 29/553,129).

Installation of TD Megapads, Marine Wharf in Surrey Quays

Wallbarn Logo

A recent project at Marine Wharf in Surrey Quays offered the perfectย example of just how fast and effective the installation of TD Megapads can be.

Project Specifications

The specifications for this project were supplied from the architect using the AUTOCAD images we have on our website and the information we publish on the NBS Plus software provided by RIBA.

For successful completion of the project, it became apparent that a product capable of holding very high weights, which the Megapads do (800kg per unit), was required to reach up to the door thresholds of the residential units.

The high clearances mean none of the timber is left in standing water. As this deck is treated softwood, if it was left in standing water permanently it would rot much faster, this design extends the life of the timber.

The timber decking was laid out onto the concreted and waterproofed areas so that everything, the terraces and the walkways around the central fountain landscaping area, was on the same level.

Significantly Reduced Installation Time

The installation team from Elite Landscapes, stated that they were able to install this decking 5 times faster than with the method they were trying previously.

Refurbishment project in Bermondsey, SE1

Wallbarn Logo

We were recently called in to help complete a refurbishment project in Bermondsey, SE1 which involved us acting in the role of advisor to the main contractor as they worked towards resurfacing the flat roof at the top of the school for the pupils to use as a play / outdoor classroom.

The main contractor was Kier Services โ€“ Facilities Management and the sub-contractor, who called Wallbarn in for advice, was PM Associates.

Working To a Tight Schedule

The time schedule for the project was extremely tight with the roof needing to be re-waterproofed and covered with the hard landscaping in the one-week window of the half-term break.ย

The roof deck was built to a fall to allow adequate drainage off the surface, the overall fall across the 10 metre length was approx. 100mm. Access to the roof area was very restricted.

Working with no crane resulted in all of the products having to be handballed up five flights of a very tight, Victorian staircase. Handballing 3 metre lengths of timber decking boards and softwood substructure was impossible.

Suggested Materials

We suggested using IPE hardwood timber tiles – 500 x 500mm x 30mm in size – mounted onto ASP adjustable pedestals. This would allow the decking surface to be laid to flat, creating a better finish for the pupils and teachers.ย

Wallbarn delivered the materials to site and everything was carried up the stairs to the roof area. Laying the decking boards onto the ASP pedestals meant that no fixings had to be made through the waterproofing membrane. This meant that the waterproofing seam was not punctured, which avoided the risk of leaks and meant none of the warranties were compromised. Installation of also extremely fast and simple.ย

Installation Techniques

The tiles were lined up at the highest point of the roof mounted onto fixed height 7mm rubber pads and levelling shims, and as each row of tiles was installed, gradually higher and higher pads and pedestals were laid under them to create a flat upper surface.

Half of the roof was laid with tiles, the other half with artificial grass. The junction between the grass and the tiles was fitted with an angled rubber fillet to prevent the tiles moving over time.

Exceptional Resolution

The installers were very pleased with the speed and ease of the system, and the project was finished in time and within budget.ย The end result was an extremely attractive finish. The client was delighted with the result.

The following gallery highlights some the changes that took place during the completion of the project.

One of the worldโ€™s biggest companies is leading the way when it comes to creating a positive, fun-filled, colourful working environment with aims of inspiring and innovating both staff and visitors alike.

Microsoft’s Building B44 in Redmond, Washington has recently completed a huge redevelopment project and now has a 35-foot living wall with over 36 plant species coupled with a three-story spiral helix staircase makes a dramatic welcoming reception area, while interactive artwork throughout creates a unique environment of engagement, and a creative home for Microsoftโ€™s Cloud & Enterprise team.

Green Roofing Benefits

Along with providing significant aesthetic benefits, the installation of a green roofing system to a building or property has every chance of proving itself to be a very Recycled Polyester Geotextile Fabrics 4worthwhile investment, rather than just an expenditure.

Read on to find out why this is:

Winter Savings – During the cold and wet winter months, the installation of a green roof can help to improve insulation by as much as 25% in dry conditions. A green roofing system can also raise the outside temperature of the roof by an average of approximately 4.5ยฐC when the weather is cold; whilstย  reducing the levels of heat loss due to wind by as much as half.

Figures such as these help to highlight exactly why the reduction in heat loss will help you to save money on your heating bills during the winter.

Summer Savings โ€“ On the flip side of the winter benefits, the installation of a green roofing system to a property also offers the ability to keep properties cooler than bare roofs by average of 15ยฐC during warm summer months.

It is far from uncommon for businesses to find themselves spending more on air conditioning bills during the summer than they spend on heating bills during the winter. Therefore if you have the opportunity to make an investment that covers all bases, surely it is worth investigation.

Radisson Blu Green Roof Project in Heathrow

Wallbarn Logo

We announced recently that we have been working on the installation of a modular green roof system at the Radisson Blu hotel at Heathrow and we are delighted to announce that the installation is now complete.

For this project, it was decided that the M-Tray sedum green roofing system would offer the ideal solution.

M-TRAY is a ready-grown, fully established sedum, sedum-and-wildflower or wildflower-only green roof loaded into a portable tray, for easier installation of green roofs.

For a look at the timeline of the project, please check out the gallery below.

Future Proofing the Installation

Access to the roof is future-proofed. If there are problems with the deck beneath or inspection is required, one M-TRAY or section can easily be lifted out without any disruption to the whole deck. With loose lay systems, the whole area may need to be destroyed when accessing the deck.

Major Advantages

A major advantage to the M-TRAY system is the โ€œclip onโ€ nature of installation. The fuss, time and skill required to install drainage layers one-by-one, to the correct level and in the correct order is removed as it comes in a complete kit.

Please contact our sales office for further information about the M-Tray green roofing system.
