Timber Tiles, Brighton
We were contacted by contractor Acre Landscapes with what is quite a common problem on retro-fit roofing projects.
One of their clients was keen to put decking across a huge penthouse roof terrace as well as all of the suspended balconies at a block of luxury flats they were refurbishing in Brighton.
The door thresholds were not high enough to allow for a traditional joist system to underpin the decking.
Once waterproofed the roof needed to have tapered insulation placed on top, leaving a minimal gap to the threshold of around 60mm.
We suggested our Timber Tiles, which can be installed where you only have 35mm of clearance, and this was deemed ample. But there was an added complication. It had been stipulated that whatever went down onto the tapered insulation needed to weigh a minimum of 80kg per m2.
As the timber tiles fall short of this we suggested the following solution:
- Lay 9mm rubber pads directly onto the insulation
- Use a standard concrete slab as ballast on top of the pads
- Install our range of adjustable pedestals to achieve a level surface
- Lay the timber tiles on top as the decorative finish
The client chose our Ipe hardwood timber tile and was extremely happy with the finish. And while they chose the same tile for the individual balconies, the weight stipulation did not apply so the tiles went straight down onto our adjustable pedestals.
