Thermo Bamboo Decking: Low-Profile Precision with a Premium Finish

When a residential roof terrace in need of a sleek, low-height decking solution came to our attention, the design challenge was clear: deliver a premium finish around two existing rooflights with only 60mm of total build-up available—all without compromising strength, durability, or style.

Traditional timber substructures were immediately ruled out due to their bulk, so Wallbarn’s aluminium and bamboo-based system became the perfect alternative.

Engineering Strength into Minimal Space

To achieve the required low build-up, our team specified the low Box Rail aluminium joist, just 15mm high. This profile delivered the structural integrity needed while keeping height to an absolute minimum.

The rails were fixed directly onto Mega Balance self-levelling pedestals, allowing for precise height adjustment and alignment across the terrace, even where the roof incorporated subtle falls. The result was a stable, perfectly level platform that integrated seamlessly around the rooflights.

This simple yet intelligent system meant rapid layout and installation, keeping timelines tight and disruption to the property minimal.

A Premium Decking Surface with Lasting Performance

On top of the substructure, we installed Thermo Bamboo decking boards—a choice driven by both aesthetic refinement and long-term performance.

Manufactured by compressing steamed bamboo fibres under high pressure, Thermo Bamboo creates an ultra-hard, dense decking material that is more dimensionally stable and rot-resistant than many tropical hardwoods. This means the boards resist movement, warping, and splitting over time, even when exposed to the elements.

Sustainability Meets Fire Safety

Bamboo’s sustainability credentials are exceptional—it is one of the fastest-growing renewable materials used in construction. The thermo treatment enhances its durability without the need for harsh chemicals or kiln drying, making it an environmentally responsible choice.

The boards are:

• Class Bfl-s1 fire-rated

• Biological Class 1 “Very Durable”

• Suitable for high-footfall areas with minimal maintenance

A Natural Finish That Ages Beautifully

With a rich brown tone that gently fades to an elegant silver-grey patina over time, Thermo Bamboo offers a warm, natural look that complements both modern and traditional architecture.

The finished terrace now sits perfectly flush with the rooflights, creating a functional, long-lasting outdoor space that feels both high-end and practical.

A Proof of Concept for Low-Build Decking Systems
