Thermo Bamboo Roof Terrace: Low-Profile Precision with a Premium Finish

This residential roof terrace project required a smart, low-height decking solution capable of working around two existing rooflights without compromising strength, durability or design quality. With only 60mm of total build-up available, traditional timber substructures were simply not viable. A lighter, more refined system was needed — one that could deliver structural performance within extremely tight height constraints.

Wallbarn’s aluminium and bamboo-based system provided the ideal solution, combining minimal profile engineering with premium surface aesthetics.

Solving Severe Height Restrictions

The key challenge was the restricted build-up depth. At just 60mm total allowance, every millimetre counted. To achieve the required structural integrity without exceeding the height limit, the team selected Wallbarn’s low-profile Box Rail aluminium joist.

At only 15mm high, the Box Rail delivers exceptional strength while maintaining a minimal profile. This slim design allowed the system to sit comfortably within the available build-up, ensuring the finished deck remained flush with surrounding features — including the existing rooflights.

The aluminium rails were fixed directly onto Mega Balance self-levelling pedestals. These pedestals allowed precise height adjustment and alignment across the entire terrace surface, even where subtle roof falls were present for drainage.

Thermo Bamboo is manufactured by compressing steamed bamboo fibres under high pressure. This process creates a dense, ultra-hard decking material that offers superior stability compared with many traditional tropical hardwoods.

• Biologically Class 1 “Very Durable”

• Suitable for high-footfall areas

• Low maintenance over their lifespan

This combination of environmental responsibility and technical performance makes Thermo Bamboo a strong alternative to traditional hardwood decking options.

Seamless Integration Around Rooflights

One of the defining aspects of this project was the requirement to work precisely around two existing rooflights. The deck needed to sit flush while preserving access, maintaining drainage and avoiding structural compromise.

Thanks to the slim aluminium joist profile and adjustable pedestals, the system allowed careful detailing around these features. The finished terrace integrates cleanly with the rooflights, creating a smooth, continuous surface without awkward transitions or raised edges.

The result is a refined, cohesive appearance that enhances the overall architecture of the building.

Warm Aesthetics with Long-Term Performance

Visually, Thermo Bamboo provides a rich brown tone on installation. Over time, this gradually fades to an elegant silver-grey patina when exposed to natural weathering, offering a softer, contemporary finish.

The natural grain pattern gives the terrace warmth and character, while the engineered density ensures the surface remains robust and practical. It is a solution that feels premium yet performs reliably in everyday use.
