When an end client required a fully compliant Class A fire-rated decking system, Wallbarn partnered with AB Building and ISW UK Ltd to deliver a seamless, start-to-finish solution.
By aligning expertise across planning, estimating, supply and installation, the team ensured every stage was handled with precision and efficiency. The result was a fully non-combustible, regulation-compliant decking system delivered without disruption or unnecessary delays.
Precision Planning and Accurate Estimating
Successful projects begin with careful preparation. To support accurate budgeting and smooth execution, Wallbarn provided a comprehensive material estimate and detailed quotation, supported by advanced 3D scaled drawings.
These visualisations proved invaluable in aligning all stakeholders:
For the Client
The 3D drawings offered a clear representation of the finished decking layout, allowing the client to visualise the completed space before construction commenced. This provided confidence in both design and investment.
For the Contractor
The scaled plans enabled more accurate installation planning, reducing uncertainties on site and creating a streamlined build process.
For the Logistics Team
Precise material calculations supported well-timed deliveries and ensured that the correct components were available exactly when required.
By coordinating early and clearly, potential inefficiencies were eliminated, allowing the programme to progress without complications.
Delivering a 100% Non-Combustible System
Wallbarn supplied the complete Class A fire-rated substructure, including:
-
MetalPad Ex adjustable pedestals
-
I-Plus aluminium joists
These components formed the structural framework for the deck.
AB Building supplied their ceramic ExaDeck boards, which meet the latest UK fire safety regulations. Combined with Wallbarn’s non-combustible substructure, the finished build achieved a fully Class A-compliant system — delivering safety assurance without compromising visual appeal.
A Simple and Efficient Fixing System
One of the strengths of the system was its intuitive connection method. Only two primary fixings were required:
M8 Wing Nut Kit
Used to securely connect pedestals to joists, as well as to join joists end-to-end or at right angles. This created a rigid and stable aluminium framework with minimal complexity.
W Clip 60
A concealed fixing that discreetly secures the decking boards in place. The clip maintains a uniform 6mm drainage gap, ensuring consistent spacing and clean, symmetrical lines across the deck surface.
This straightforward approach reduced installation time while maintaining structural integrity and a high-quality finish.
A Smooth Transition from Old to New
The project followed a carefully structured sequence:
-
Detailed planning and material estimation
-
Removal and responsible disposal of the existing WPC decking
-
Delivery of new fire-rated components
-
Installation of the aluminium substructure
-
Secure fitting of ceramic ExaDeck boards
By coordinating each stage closely, disruption was kept to a minimum and the installation progressed efficiently.
Operating as One Cohesive Unit
A key factor in the project’s success was the unified working relationship between all parties. Rather than operating independently, Wallbarn, AB Building and ISW UK collaborated as a single delivery team.
-
Wallbarn provided the technical design expertise and fire-rated structural system.
-
AB Building supplied premium ceramic decking materials.
-
ISW UK delivered skilled on-site installation.
This collaborative model ensured full compatibility between components and removed the friction often associated with multi-supplier projects.
A Safe, Durable and Visually Impressive Outcome
The completed decking system provides:
-
Full Class A fire compliance
-
Long-term structural stability
-
Clean architectural lines
-
Reliable drainage performance
-
Minimal ongoing maintenance
The client now benefits from an outdoor space that is both visually striking and built for longevity. The concealed fixing system enhances the clean, refined aesthetic, while the non-combustible materials provide complete peace of mind.
The Value of Strategic Partnerships
This project demonstrates how effective collaboration can simplify complex compliance requirements. Through early planning, clear communication and coordinated delivery, the team transformed a regulatory necessity into a streamlined, high-performance solution.
When the right partners align from concept through to completion, the outcome is not only technically sound but commercially efficient and aesthetically refined.
The finished terrace stands as clear proof that a carefully engineered Class A fire-rated decking system can deliver safety, durability and design quality in equal measure.
